Police officers from the Special Operations Unit have arrested a Russian national and 3 illegal workers on the island of Koh Pha Ngan.

Meanwhile, another young Russian was arrested for an illegal vehicle rental business on the same Gulf island. Tourist police led local police and officials to detain Danil Kulnevnich who had rented out his single Honda Forza for 10,000 baht per month. He’d posted an ad on his Facebook page.

There has been a recent acceleration of arrests and investigations into foreigners, their businesses and work permits, especially in Phuket.

Back to the Russian man and his restaurant…  The man was named only as “Boris”, and is the owner of the Colourful Hut restaurant. He was arrested yesterday, March 12, along with 3 Burmese nationals working in the restaurant illegally. It’s understood one of the Burmese was employed as a cashier.

According to a Khaosod English report, the arrests took place during an inspection of the island’s hotels, nightlife, and restaurants, aimed at preventing crime that affects tourists and residents of Surat Thani province.

The Russian has been taken to Koh Pha Ngan Police Station to face prosecution. He is being charged accordingly…

• Failure to notify the authorities of the employment of a foreigner within 15 days of the start date
• Allowing a foreign worker to work outside the scope of their work permit (cashier)
• Hiring a foreigner without a work permit
• Providing shelter and assistance to a foreign national who has entered the kingdom illegally in order to help that person avoid arrest

Meanwhile, the 3 Burmese workers also face charges.

• 18 year old Mr. Nay Lin Naing is charged with entering and staying in the Kingdom without permission and working without a work permit.

• 34 year old Mr. Min Niang Lin is charged with failing to notify the registrar of the name of his employer, the workplace of his employer, and the nature of the main work he performs for his employer within 15 days of starting work for his employer.

• 33 year old is charged with working outside the scope of her work permit.
