Police in Chiang Mai have arrested an American man who allegedly stabbed two Dutch tourists in the main city district.
Other media reported victims as Norwegian.
A search for 27 year old Brian Andrew Burggraf reportedly got underway after the stabbing of 52 year old tourist, Erik Jan, and his 20 year old son, Colin Mike, during the evening of Wednesday, October 11.
Burggraf was arrested at around 1.00am on Thursday morning in the sub-district of Jed Yod. Arresting officers found a 15 centimetre knife in his pocket, along with a quantity of marijuana.
According to a Nation Thailand report, Burggraf has confessed to stabbing the father and son but has not given any reason for doing so. The victims were walking along the ancient Chiang Mai moat with 6 other Dutch tourists at around 9 pm when Burggraf suddenly attacked them.
Witnesses say the American approached the group from behind and proceeded to stab them. He inflicted a 10 centimetre cut to Jan’s throat, as well as two stab wounds to his back, while his son suffered a long, deep cut to his arm. Both men were rushed to Chiang Mai Hospital and the police were notified.
There are also some reports that Burggraf had earlier attacked a Norwegian man who is currently in intensive care after being stabbed in the stomach. According to locals, the American was wearing clothes that match the description of the perpetrator in that attack.
