Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is warning nightlife venues that they must check the age of their customers by insisting patrons carry their ID cards or passports. Hmm… would you want to take your passport on a night out? (Our tip, take a copy and never your actual passport)
Anutin’s warning follows reports of a Thai boxing champion, who’s been accused of raping a 17 year old girl he met in a nightclub. Under Thai law, patrons must be over the age of 20 to visit such venues and to purchase alcohol.
The unnamed girl claims boxer Somluck Kamsing raped her after she met him in a nightclub. She says she was able to enter the club using a fake ID card. She has accused Somluck of taking her to a hotel where he carried out the attack. The Olympic medallist denies the allegations.
Following the girl’s claim that she gained entry to the club using a fake ID, Anutin says entertainment venues must implement strict age verification measures. He says operators must insist on seeing a real ID card or passport before admitting customers.
“Customers need to show their real ID cards, not photos on their phone.”
