Bangkok officials are rolling out a long list of safety measures that will be in force during New Year celebrations in the capital. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration says the measures are aimed at boosting public safety and enabling a swift response in the event of any emergencies.
Deputy Bangkok governor Tavida Kamolvej says the BMA has drawn up a disaster prevention plan, with all district offices instructed to ensure the safety of partygoers on the big night.
Officials are working with local business operators across all districts where outdoor and indoor celebrations are planned. The BMA is also setting up a public service centre to take care of revellers, Tavida says.
The City Law Office will handle traffic management, with assistance from district officials, according to Tavida. Meanwhile, the Medical Service Department is working with the city’s hospitals to prepare emergency response systems in the event of any accidents.
Inspections are being carried out at sites hosting fireworks displays and at the facilities where fireworks and other pyrotechnic equipment are being stored.
The Bangkok Post reports that firefighters will be on standby at 37 locations across Bangkok during the end-of-year celebrations.
Officials expect most people to gather at Bangkok landmarks such as CentralWorld, Icon Siam, Asiatique, Siam Square and Samyan Mitrtown, ahead of the New Year countdown. Event organisers at these venues have been asked to provide officials with their health and safety plans ahead of festivities commencing.
