Police in Bangkok have arrested a Cambodian couple, charged with pickpocketing shoppers in the capital and entering the kingdom illegally. Nation Thailand reports that the arrests were announced by Bangkok police at a press conference yesterday, August 27.

The couple is accused of stealing from over 100 shoppers at various Bangkok malls. They have been named as 31 year old Boy “Bui” Yangha and his wife, 27 year old Som “Mary” Jean.

According to poluceg, both were arrested in front of the room they were renting at the Sup Asia Apartment building on Soi Sukhumvit 111, in Samut Prakan, just outside Bangkok, on Saturday.

The arrests came after an undercover police officer saw the couple pickpocketing a shopper at the Imperial Samrong shopping mall and dispatched a team of officers after them.

According to Nation Thailand, police in the capital have been clamping down on pickpockets after several complaints from shoppers who’ve had their purses or phones stolen.

It’s understood officers have obtained security footage that shows the couple robbing their victims. One of them would divert a shopper’s attention while the other picked their pocket. Once the mission was successfully accomplished, the couple would disappear.

Police say the husband and wife team admitted to crossing illegally into Thailand at the natural border in the eastern province of Sa Kaew. The couple say they entered the kingdom early last year and have been pickpocketing in Bangkok and Samut Prakan in order to survive. They have confessed to stealing from over 100 people.
