Police at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport have arrested a Chinese national attempting to smuggle 3 kilos of heroin in baby formula containers.
Phanurat Lakboon from the Office of the Narcotics Control Board says the 29-year-old suspect was arrested while attempting to smuggle the drugs to Australia.
The arrest was the result of intelligence received by ONCB officers stationed in Beijing. The Airport Interdiction Task Force in Thailand investigated and discovered the Chinese national was scheduled to fly from Suvarnabhumi to Melbourne on February 26.
On that day, officers at Suvarnabhumi stopped the man and conducted a search of his belongings, which uncovered powdered heroin concealed in baby formula bottles. Heroin was also discovered in stick form, hidden in 6 books, which were all in a suitcase.
According to a Khaosod English report, the man was arrested and charged with “attempting to illicitly export a Type 1 narcotic from the Kingdom of Thailand” and “illicitly possessing a Type 1 narcotic for the purpose of trafficking and impairing national security”. He is being transferred to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau for legal processing.
According to Phanurat, since October 1, 2022, the AITF has prevented 85 attempts to export narcotics to Australia, confiscating a total of 116.116 kilos of crystal methamphetamine and 116.147 kilos of heroin.
