A British man who was too drunk to unlock the gate to his Pattaya home impaled himself after trying to climb over it. The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday, April 7, according to a Pattaya News report.

The man suffered a serious injury to his abdomen after he became impaled on a pointed iron fence in the Banglamung district of Chon Buri. Rescue workers received an emergency call just after midnight and arrived on the scene to find the man stuck on the gate.

The man, named as 65 year old Michael Girling, had sustained a wound 5 or 6 inches deep from a fence post that had pierced his abdomen. Emergency workers were able to lift him from the gate and provide first-aid at the scene, before rushing the critically injured Briton to hospital.

Local media outlets have reported that the man had initially tried to unlock the gate leading to his home but was too drunk to do so. He then decided to climb over it but lost his footing and became impaled on one of the sharp posts.

A neighbour, named only as “Ms Pat” heard the man’s cries and alerted rescue workers, while also fetching a ladder to help rescue him.
