The ongoing expansion of Krabi Airport is set to be complete by late 2024, with the new facility operational by 2025. According to the Department of Airports, the project is already over 87% complete. Once done, the renovated airport will be able to accommodate up to 8 million passengers a year.
The project consists of improvements to the airport’s two terminals and car park building, as well as the construction of a third terminal. The cost of the project has been estimated at over 2.9 billion baht. An upgrade to the airport’s electrical system is also underway, as is the construction of a taxiway, with both those projects over 58% complete.
Once finished, the 3 passenger terminals will offer total space of 68,000 square metres, a big increase on current capacity. Krabi Airport is expected to be able to process 3,000 passengers an hour, or 8 million a year, doubling its current capacity. Improvements to the car park building mean it will be able to hold up to 2,000 cars.
According to a Phuket Express report, recent data shows that between October 2022 and June 2023, Krabi Airport welcomed 1.69 million travellers, 1.37 million of whom were domestic, with 318,550 international passengers. By the end of next month, the number of people using the airport is expected to reach 1.79 million passengers.
Officials say the new and improved Krabi Airport will be able to meet the growing demand for travel to and from the province, thereby stimulating local economies and tourism in the region.
