A tourist from Ghana has been arrested in Chiang Mai after one man died and two others were injured in a drink-driving incident. Nation Thailand reports that 26 year old Wisdom Okyere has been arrested and charged with killing one person and critically injuring two others while driving under the influence of alcohol.
It’s understood the incident happened after Mr Okyere had left a pub in the Mueang district of Chiang Mai on Saturday, December 16. Police and rescue workers from the Lanna Chiang Mai Foundation were notified just before 4am.
They arrived at the scene on Kajasarn Road to find a Laotian worker had been killed and two others were severely injured.
Mr Okyere’s blood alcohol level was found to be 121 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 50mg (.05% blood alcohol level).
According to the report, the dead man and the injured were all workers with the Sin Yotha Company. They were in the process of moving communication cables underground when they were struck by Mr Okyere’s vehicle, which was allegedly being driven at speed.
Mr Okyere told officers he was in Chiang Mai on a 2-week long holiday when he went for a drink with friends. He says he was driving back to his hotel and didn’t see the workers when he accidentally hit them.
He has been charged with drink driving and reckless driving causing death and injury, as well as driving without a licence.
