A foreign tourist has died after drowning in a Bangkok canal while celebrating Songkran. Nation Thailand reports that the tourist’s body was recovered from the Saen Saep canal, by the Khlong Saen Saep Pier, under the Chalerm Lok Bridge.
It’s understood the tourist, whose name or nationality have not been confirmed, was celebrating Songkran when he lost his grip on his water pistol and it fell in the canal.
According to media reports, the man then entered the canal in an attempt to retrieve the water gun but drowned while trying to do so. It’s understood a number of people, including other tourists, tried to intervene to help him but were unsuccessful in their attempts.
Typically, the Saen Saep canal is highly polluted and no one would voluntarily jump in for any reason.
The authorities were notified at around 7pm on Saturday, April 13, with rescuers retrieving his body shortly after arriving on the scene.
The tourist’s body has been taken to Ramathibodi Hospital for a post-mortem.
