Footage of a Chinese tourist wearing the uniform of a Thai police officer is going viral on social media and caused a bit of a brouhaha with the authorities.
Thailand’s national police chief wants a “fact-finding” investigation, while the Thai netizen who shared the footage and images is questioning the appropriateness of the tourist’s behaviour.
According to a Bangkok Post report into the matter, police spokesman Achayon Kraithong says officers are investigating the origin of the video, when and where it was recorded, and the identity of the tourist wearing the uniform. He could not say however if the tourist will be hauled in for questioning.
“Let’s wait for the fact-finding probe before we decide if there is a breach of the law or regulations. The police chief has ordered an inquiry into the clip.”
Achayon went on to ask tourists not to wear police uniforms or ask police officers to drive them somewhere. In the social media footage, a man, seemingly a Thai police officer, can be seen opening a car door for the tourist in police uniform.
Achayon says Thai police officers need to use caution when approached by tourists who want to use their equipment or location for social media.
Meanwhile, the deputy commander of the Police Education Bureau says the officer in the video is the from the Central Police Tactical Training unit. Somporn Sajjapoj says the officer has admitted being in the video with his Chinese friend, who borrowed his uniform.
