A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck the district of Pai, in the northern province of Mae Hong Son, yesterday afternoon, with widespread tremors reported. Pia is a popular ‘bohemian’ side trip for tourists visiting Chiang Mai.
Nation Thailand reports that the Earthquake Observation Division of the Thailand Meteorological Department put the epicentre in the sub-district of Wiang Nua, at a depth of 2 kilometres.
The quake struck at around 2.30pm, with tremors also reported in several districts of Chiang Mai, where Governor Nirat Pongsitthavorn dispatched officials to check for damage. The quake was followed by a 2.4-magnitude aftershock in Wiang Nua, at around 2.42pm.
According to the Chiang Mai Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, tremors were also reported in the districts of Mueang, Mae Taeng, Samerng, San Sai, and Mae Rim. However, there have been no reports of injuries or damage.
