Bangkok has topped a list of the world’s most visited cities, beating Paris into second place. According to a Nation Thailand report, both Phuket (a city?) and Pattaya have made the top 20.
The rankings, compiled by credit card corporation Mastercard, place Bangkok in the top spot, with 22.78 million international visitors. By contrast, Paris had 19.10 million visitors and London is in third place, with 19.09 million.
This is the second year in a row that Bangkok has scooped the top position, with the report praising the Thai capital’s vibrant street life, food scene, and temples and shrines.
“Enjoy the usual city comforts of mega-malls and modern spaces before turning towards its collection of golden temples and shrines. Follow your nose to Bangkok’s countless street markets stuffed with spicy, sour, sweet, and salty flavours, then hop on a boat to reach their floating markets.”
Phuket is in at number 14 (down from 12 last year) with 9.89 million visitors, followed by Pattaya at 15, with 9.44 million. The report has praised Phuket’s beautiful beaches, nearby islands, and two national parks.
“The range of beaches is spectacular, from party-central Patong to luxurious Surin and Ao Bang Thao. Meanwhile, stunning coral reefs invite scuba divers and snorkeling groups to explore the glittering waters of the Similan Islands.”
The museums of Phuket Town also got a mention, as did the island’s wildlife sanctuaries and cooking classes.
At number 15, Pattaya won praise for its beaches and the party lifestyle on offer.
“There are stunning temples and shrines, but Pattaya is known for its seaside resorts. Sign up for a harried tour of the city before settling in along the coast for more sun and relaxation. This is a city that embraces hedonist attitudes to the max.”
