Six students have been killed and another 18 injured, after the roof of a school collapsed during heavy rain yesterday evening. Thai PBS World reports that the tragic incident occurred at the Wat Noen Po School, in the Sam Ngam district of Phichit province, in northern Thailand.
It’s understood that torrential rain and high winds prompted several students and others to seek shelter in a school building in the sub-district of Noen Po.
When the roof caved in, emergency personnel rushed to the scene to help those trapped under debris. Rescue workers pulled 20 people out of the rubble, including 2 students who had been killed instantly and 4 others who were later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
According to the Thai PBS World report, Phichit Governor Payon Asawapichayon arrived at the school to oversee the rescue operation. Officials will open an investigation into the cause of the tragedy today.
