The authorities have discovered 7.5 kilograms of heroin concealed in a seat cushion and heading for Australia.

Khirisak Tantinawachai, commander-in-chief of the Narcotics Suppression unit, says police were alerted by a young Thai woman who is studying in Australia.

The woman had posted on social media, offering to transport items on her upcoming return flight to Australia. She then received a payment of 3,500 baht from a man who asked her to transport what he said was a “woman’s purse”.

However, on receipt of the package, the student’s father became suspicious due to the weight of the item. After opening it, the “woman’s purse” turned out to be a seat cushion, which the student then took to police.

On opening up the cushion, officers discovered 7.5 kilograms of heroin that had been concealed inside. The haul has an estimated street value of over 20 million baht in Thailand, even more in Australia, according to police.

It’s understood the man who paid the student to carry the item is from Laos and the hunt is now on to find him and uncover the source of the drugs.
