The Thai PM, Srettha Thavisin, will forego his monthly prime ministerial salary, instead donating it to a number of charitable foundations. The decision has been confirmed by government spokesman Chai Wacharonke, according to a report by Thai PBS World.
The PM plans to donate to a different charity each month, with the Foundation for Children receiving his first month’s salary. Srettha, who also serves as Finance Minister, receives a monthly sum of 125,590 baht (salary of 75,590 baht and a 50,000-baht position allowance).
According to Chai, the PM says giving is a good thing and one should give as much as one can afford. It’s understood the charities that will benefit from the PM’s decision will be chosen by a working team put together for this purpose.
The PM himself plans to meet with a number of charitable foundations to hear more about their requirements and any challenges they face that he may be able to help with.
