A Thai woman has been hospitalised with serious injuries, including a broken nose, after being attacked by a Swiss man in southern Thailand. The incident follows online hullaballoo over another Swiss man, living in Yamu, Phuket, who allegedly kicked the back of a young Thai doctor in front of his house last month.
This new incident incident occurred yesterday evening, in a supermarket in the southern province of Trang.
The victim’s son, 25 year old Kritphong Khikkham says his mother, who is healing from a dental procedure and uses a walker to get around, was doing some shopping when a foreign man bumped into her.
She berated him, telling him to be more polite, which seemingly caused the Swiss man to lose his temper and start shouting at the woman, before then punching her four times and walking off.
The 58 year old woman then threw a water bottle at him. He then turned around, walked back and grabbed her by the neck, before hitting her again, including banging her head against the ground.
The woman was seriously injured, with her face covered in blood and bruises, according to the report. Supermarket employees came to her aid and she was rushed to Trang Hospital.
It’s understood she has a fractured nose, two black eyes, and swelling to her back. Doctors are carrying out more tests to determine the extent of her injuries.
Meanwhile, the Swiss man, named only as 60 year old Mr Straumann, has been taken to Trang Police Station for questioning. His immigration record shows he is in Thailand on a retirement visa.
Investigating officers have examined CCTV footage from the shopping centre but they do not show the incident. However, it’s understood several people have come forward as witnesses and are willing to testify.
