Thailand has joined 17 other countries whose citizens are being held hostage in Gaza to call for their immediate release. Again.

Yesterday, April 25, PM Srettha Thavisin posted a message for the 8 Thai workers still being held captive in Gaza since the conflict broke out between Hamas and Israel on October 7, 2023.

The statement was issued by the PM and the leaders of 17 other countries: Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

“Today, I joined fellow leaders of 17 countries with remaining hostages in Gaza in the Joint Statement, calling for the immediate release of all hostages, including our 8 Thai nationals. I view this matter as an urgent humanitarian issue and will continue to do my utmost for the safety and the release of our Thai nationals so that they can return home as soon as possible.”

Around 1,200 people, most of them civilians, were killed in the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7. Another 250 people were abducted.

To date, over 34,000 Palestinians have died in the conflict and two-thirds of them are women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The two largest cities in Gaza have been all but destroyed and around 80% of the population has been forced to flee to other parts of the territory.
