The daughter of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, currently in exile overseas after 17 years, says her father has delayed his plans to return to Thailand. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, a PM candidate for the Pheu Thai Party (and a new mum of 2 months), says her father doesn’t want to make the political situation worse and will wait until things “settle down”.
“Even though my father has told the press that his return home has nothing to do with politics, many people believe the two are connected.”
Thaksin has previously confirmed his intention to return to the kingdom this month and Paetongtarn says his return won’t be delayed much past that date.
According to a Nation Thailand report, she says her father is eager to solve Thailand’s political problems, but the delay in his return is not linked to Thailand getting a new government.
Thaksin was ousted as PM in a military coup on September 19, 2006. In 2008, he fled Thailand to escape a jail sentence. The former PM was found guilty in 4 corruption cases and given a 12-year prison sentence but has remained in exile.
