Vietnamese rice has been judged the world’s best, followed by rice from Cambodia and India.

According to a Nation Thailand report, Vietnam took the top prize at the International World Rice Conference, held in Cebu, in the Philippines, from November 28 – 30.

Chookiat Ophaswongse, president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, acknowledges that the ST25 rice variety from Vietnam has been judged the world’s best this year. It faced competition from 30 varieties of rice from different countries.

Chookiat adds that in previous competitions, Thai rice has been praised for its high quality, standards, and timely delivery.

This year, rice varieties from Vietnam, Cambodia and India made it into the top 3, according to a Rice Trader report. The winning entry from Vietnam was developed by a private Vietnamese business and was widely praised by all chefs.

Thailand’s Hom Mali 105 rice previously scooped the top prize two years in a row, in 2020 and 2021. However, Cambodia surpassed it in 2022, with its Phka Rumduol rice winning best rice in the world.

2023 is the second year in a row that Thailand has failed to win anything in the global rice awards.
