A Bangkok worker has died after a steel sheet fell on him at an MRT construction site.
Nation Thailand reports that the unnamed man was working on the construction of an MRT station when the accident happened at around 8.50am yesterday morning, December 24.
The Wong Wein Yai station is on the MRT Purple Line in the Thonburi area of the capital. The man was rushed to Taksin Hospital after being struck by the falling sheet, but subsequently died.
An investigation has been launched into the accident, with the contractor, Unique Engineering and Construction, ordered to suspend work for 7 days. The initial findings indicate that a steel sheet used to reinforce one of the station walls slipped from a crane and struck the worker.
Unique Engineering and Construction has won a contract for the Purple Line project 4 times now, with the latest contract being for the design and build of tunnels and stations from Memorial Bridge to Dao Khanong in the southern part of the Purple Line.
The accident occurred just hours after a conductor rail from the Pink Line fell down to the road at around 5am the same morning. In that incident, 3 cars were damaged but no injuries were reported.
