Along Phuket’s west coast, the annual wet season adds an additional danger – treacherous share breaks and dangerous rips.
Mr. Jurgen, a 52 year old German tourist and his 11 year old son headed into the water last night, August 7 around 7.30pm, in the dark – Phuket’s sunset was at 6.45pm last night.
A particularly nasty wave hit Mr. Jurgen, pulling him under. His son managed to find his way back to the shore.
Karon Sub-district’s municipal rescuers arrived soon after. They rescued Mr. Jurgen from the sea and administered CPR to revive him. He was transported to Chalong Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
His death has been reported to the local German Consulate General.
Mr. Jurgen’s death is the sixth in 2 weeks as local officials scramble to contain the list of people drowning along the island’s west coast beaches this year.
It was not reported if there were red flags along the coast at the time as it was after sunset.
