A Chinese tourist has been injured in a parasailing accident at Phuket’s Karon Beach. The woman, understood to be an influencer in her home country, broke her leg when the parasail hit the ground. Her story has since gone viral on social media.
The incident happened back on February 24 when the woman’s landing was mis-timed, causing it to hit the ground. The parasail operator then called an ambulance, but according to the Chinese woman’s account, it took 2 hours to arrive due to severe traffic congestion.
She goes on to say that on arrival at the hospital, the facility didn’t have enough equipment to treat her and she had to wait 6 hours before being transferred to a private hospital.
She’s not happy with the parasail operator either and has reportedly asked for 200,000 baht compensation for the accident. It’s not known if she did receive any compensation, but she has allegedly threatened to take legal action against the operator.
The woman’s story has garnered millions of views on social media and been shared hundreds of thousands of times. Phuket officials have gone into damage limitation overdrive, visiting the woman in hospital and personally apologising through her interpreter.
They also paid a visit to the parasail operator and confirmed he is legally registered to operate and has all the correct paperwork. The unnamed operator says he has at least 10 witnesses and has blamed the wind for “suddenly changing direction”, causing the parasail to hit the ground.
Phuket-GO would recommend you watch a few other people taking parasail rides before considering paying for your own ride. Consider that, apart from the risks, the rides are quite brief.
