Tragedy struck near Phang Nga’s Similan Islands on Saturday, January 21, as a 44 year old Chinese man lost his life in a drowning incident.
Authorities received a call at 1:45 pm, alerting them to the incident. The victim’s identity is currently withheld pending notification of the local consul general and family members.
According to officials from Thai Maritime Enforcement Centre Region 3, the tourist encountered difficulties while swimming near Koh 7 in Mu Koh Similan National Park.
Prompt response from rescuers helped tour operators retrieve the man from the water and administer first aid. Medics, along with personnel from a navy security unit, provided aid before transferring him to the Khao Lak Medical Centre.
The Similan Islands are accessed by tour boats, departing from the Thap Lamu Pier in Phang Nga. The pier is approximately a 90 minute bus ride from Phuket.
