Drivers urge Phuket officials to repair “dangerous” parts of island’s busiest road

Residents in north Phuket are calling on officials to finish the work on Thepkrasattri Road, which they say is dangerous in parts. The Phuket News reports that work on drain installation in a northbound section of the island’s busiest road is yet to be completed.

Posting online, many road users say they have previously taken their complaints to local officials and nothing has happened. They say sections of Thepkrasattri Road are downright dangerous and pose a risk to drivers, in particular motorbike riders.

“There is a lot of flooding and potholes, which make it muddy and slippery causing accidents.”

According to the Phuket News report, motorists have complained about sections of the road that remain unpaved and large areas by the side of the road that remain saturated, increasing the accident risk, particularly for motorbikes.

The complainants single out two areas as being the worst: a section of road in front of the Karn Keha housing estate in Baan Lipon, and the area opposite the Shell petrol station in Muang Mai. Work to install large drains in both sections is still ongoing as the areas are repeatedly flooded during seasonal downpours.

Chalermpong Saengdee from the Move Forward Party, one of 3 recently elected MPs in Phuket, has taken to Facebook to call for an urgent completion of repair work.

“I would like to say to the officials that they should pay attention to the safety of road users as much as possible. This should not be neglected. I would like to urge relevant agencies to urgently take corrective action for the safety of road users, to prevent accidents and loss of life and property.”
