Police in Phuket have arrested an apparently intoxicated American man after a foreign woman claimed he stole her mobile phone. The drama unfolded on Kata Beach on the weekend.
The Phuket Express reports that the incident happened at Kata Beach on Sunday, June 2, and was captured by a bystander. The footage subsequently went viral on social media… of course.

According to Karon Police, a foreign woman told them she’d seen the American tourist, who she says was very drunk, taking the phone she’d left on the beach while she was swimming in the sea.
Immediately leaving the water to confront the man, the woman says he refused to hand back the phone. Lifeguards then came to the woman’s aid and managed to return the phone to her and call the police. It’s understood there were several witnesses to the incident.
The American was taken to Karon Police Station for questioning. While it’s understood the woman did not want to press charges once she got her phone back, officers have decided to charge the man with being a public nuisance.
Neither foreigner has been named by the authorities.
