Phuket police have arrested a foreign man with dual Belgian and Moroccan nationality, who is wanted for attempted murder in Belgium. The 36 year old, named only as Mr Achmal, was working as a DJ at a Patong nightlife venue.
According to a Phuket News report, a Brussels court had sentenced the man to a 10 year prison term for attempted murder. He was found guilty of “attempting to murder another person with premeditation, carrying a firearm without permission, and possession of ammunition spare parts or accessories which were installed on a firearm without permission.”
It’s unclear how Achmal absconded, but Phanthana Nuchanart, deputy chief of the Immigration Bureau, says the DJ used both his Belgian and Moroccan passports to enter, exit, and re-enter Thailand several times.
The authorities tracked him down as he was moving between residences in Bangkok, Sisaket, in the northeast of the country, and Phuket. It’s understood he went undercover working as a DJ in Phuket and was eventually arrested at an apartment in Patong.
The police have handed him over to the Office of the Public Prosecutor, which is working with the Foreign Office to arrange for his extradition to Belgium.
