Netizens have expressed anger at a foreign man who gestured at an eye witness to say nothing as he used bolt cutters to remove a police lock from his illegally parked motorbike.

The Phuket News reports that the incident happened at around midday on Friday, April 26, and was filmed by someone who later shared the footage on social media. Since, it’s become a widely shared post.

According to the report, the man had parked his bike illegally outside the Kasikorn Bank on Phang Nga Road in Phuket Town. Traffic police subsequently place a wheel lock and chain on the motorbike. When the man returned, he at first shook the lock in an attempt to get it off.

Unable to do so, he then left, with the witness assuming he’d gone to the police station to pay the fine. However, he returned five minutes later carrying bolt cutters and proceeded to use them to cut the chain holding the lock in place.

Seeing that someone was watching him, the man then put his finger to his lips as if motioning the witness to “keep quiet”, before casually riding off on the motorbike. But the ‘safety-first’ foreigner did ensure his passenger was wearing a motorbike helmet before riding off.

His actions have prompted a load of virtual hand wringing on social media. Some netizens have expressed confusion as to why the man would spend money on bolt cutters instead of just paying the fine, which they say would have cost less

Meanwhile, the chief of Phuket Town Police, Prathueng Phonmana, says he has ordered officers to review CCTV footage of the incident and work with traffic police to identify the man and bring him to justice.
