Suppress the Crazy German Uncle” – so they did.

Police in Phuket have arrested a German man after concerned residents accused him of “erratic and threatening behaviour” whilst brandishing knives and axes.

Chalong Police arrested the unnamed man at his home in Soi Naya, Rawai, last Friday, April 5, after checks revealed he had overstayed his visa by 500 days. The man allegedly used various weapons to threaten neighbours and arresting officers.

According to a Phuket News report, the arrest was carried out under a search warrant issued by the Phuket Provincial Court for a police operation named “Suppress the Crazy German Uncle”.

Officers say that when they arrived at the man’s home, he began acting suspiciously and aggressively, running back inside, and locking the door. He then allegedly threatened that he would fight “until his death” anyone who tried to enter the property.

According to the police, the man was also brandishing a weapon – although officers have not disclosed what it was – and started throwing items at them from the house. Officers eventually managed to enter the house and subdue and disarm the man. He was then taken to Chalong Police Station for legal processing, although officers have not confirmed what the charges will be.

Chalong Police say the German had become a menace for his neighbours, who were concerned about his behaviour. It’s understood many people had tried to reason with him but got nowhere.

He is the latest offender in a spate of foreigners behaving badly across the island (and elsewhere in Thailand). The Thai authorities have announced a crackdown on foreigners breaking the law, with several arrests in recent weeks.
