A young Iranian boxer has died after the big bike he was riding was involved in a collision in a Phuket underpass. The accident happened yesterday, January 11, just after 8 am, in the Chalong Underpass on Chao Fa West Road, in the south of the island.
The bike rider has been named as 23 year old Fariyar Aminipour, a famous boxer from Iran. It’s understood he was living in Phuket and studying Muay Thai at the Tiger Muay Thai facility on Soi Ta-iad in Chalong.
The Phuket Express reports that Chalong Police and rescue workers arrived at the scene of the accident and found Aminipour lying on the ground. The Iranian had sustained serious head injuries and was bleeding heavily. It has not been confirmed if he was wearing a helmet. He was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Aminipour’s severely damaged bike was lying nearby. In Phuket, motorbikes are banned from entering the island’s underpasses, with warning signs posted at the entrances to indicate this. According to eyewitnesses, the boxer lost control of his bike at a curve inside the underpass.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage of the area as part of their investigation.
