Two people have died and several others injured in an incident on Phra Baramee Road near the east side of Patong Hill last night (May 7). The incident occurred when a pickup truck carrying migrant workers veered across the central reservation and collided with a motorbike.
Authorities received reports of the accident in front of Tiger Kingdom attraction around 6:30pm. Police and rescue workers arrived to find ten people injured, two were in critical condition.
The scene revealed a blue Isuzu pickup truck, registered in Nakhon Sri Thammarat, lying on its side with damage to its windshield. There was also a red Honda PCX motorbike, registered in Phuket, that had suffered heavy damage at the front.
The two seriously injured victims, identified as 61 year old Udom Haadsoi and 53 year old Kwanta Haad Soi, were riding the motorbike. Both were unresponsive at the scene. Udom was pronounced dead upon arrival at Vachira Phuket Hospital, while Kwanta later died at Bangkok Hospital Phuket.
The driver of the pickup truck, 46 year old Montree Saengnak, escaped unharmed. He told police that he was transporting ten workers from a hotel painting job in Karon back to a workers’ camp in Thalang when the accident occurred. He said that the light rain had made the roads slippery.
Police took Montree for alcohol testing, which showed up negative. But he was detained for further questioning as the investigation continues.
