The director of Phuket International Airport says the facility expects to handle an estimated 49,000 passengers a day over Chinese New Year.
Monchai Tanode says an overall total of 640,000 passengers (430,393 international and 210,592 domestic) are expected through the airport during the holiday period of February 4 – 16. The airport will handle 3,915 flights, around 301 a day, made up of 2,298 international flights and 1,617 domestic flights.
Chinese New Year day will be on February 10.
Monchai adds that the airport has invested in technology and infrastructure to improve safety and alleviate overcrowding. A passenger tracking system will monitor numbers and congestion around the clock, while self-service technology, such as self-check-in kiosks, is expected to speed things up and reduce queues.
The airport has introduced a new slogan to signal its readiness for the passenger influx. Monchai says “Safety is the Standard, Service is the Heart” underlines the airport’s commitment to high levels of safety, combined with top-level services.
The airport will also host a number of activities to mark Chinese New Year, with a dragon dance happening on Thursday, February 8, and the installation of a decorated arch, providing passengers with a Chinese New Year photo backdrop in the international terminal.
Airport bosses are reminding passengers to leave plenty of time for their journeys, recommending they arrive at least 2 – 3 hours before their scheduled departure time.
Flight schedules can be checked through Airports of Thailand’s “Sawasdee by AoT” app or by calling AoT’s Contact Centre on 076-351111 or 076-351801.
