Phuket entertainment operators have agreed more zones on the island where bars and clubs can remain open until 4am. According to a Phuket News report, over 70 nightlife venue owners agreed yesterday, November 15, to have four zones in the main city district, including 2 in Phuket Town, 1 in Chalong and another in Karon.

Of course they did.

The nightlife operators were attending a meeting in Phuket Town, the second such public forum to seek the views of local residents, business operators and other stakeholders.

Another meeting took place earlier this week, when the district of Kathu held its public hearing on Tuesday. It was agreed at that meeting that Kathu would have six late-night zones, all of them located in Patong.

At yesterday’s meeting, while four zones were agreed across the main city district, it was also noted that when taking safety, environmental and economic factors into consideration, the district as a whole is “not ready” for late-night opening.

Nightlife operators agreed it would be best to first trial late-night closing in Patong, seen as the main hub of the island’s nightlife, in order to boost the province’s tourism sector.

The new ‘official’ 4am closing times are set to kick off on December 15, although hundreds of venues have been flouting the closing times for many years already.
