Phuket livestream targeting Chinese tourists attracts 15 million viewers

A livestream from Phuket, aimed at selling tourism products to the Chinese, attracted 15 million viewers and generated 150 million baht in revenue for Thai tourism.

The Super World Trip Boss Live on Wednesday, February 28, was the second such event and was organised by Trip.com, a multinational travel service with 45,000 employees based in Shanghai. The event was organised in partnership with the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Nation Thailand reports that the first livestream was held in Bangkok on January 31, attracting more than 20 million online viewers and revenue of more than 220 million baht.

In total, both livestreams have generated sales of more than 370 million baht.

The TAT is expecting a surge in interest from Chinese tourists as a result of the livestream project. Tourism officials in Thailand are intent on building confidence among Chinese tourists who want to visit the kingdom.

The association has a target of 8 million Chinese tourists this year, more than twice that of last year. However, this is still nowhere near the nearly 11 million Chinese visitors seen in 2019, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The TAT says a total of 811,853 Chinese visitors arrived in the kingdom in the period between January 1 and February 11 this year. The numbers have increased primarily as a result of a temporary visa exemption introduced for Chinese nationals. The reciprocal arrangement has now been made permanent as of today.

Meanwhile, the TAT continues to plan activities and campaigns aimed at boosting tourism and improving Thailand’s reputation among Chinese travellers. The association has already organised trips for Chinese influencers and media outlets, as it works to meet its 8 million target for 2024.
