Somchart Techathavorncharoen, a Move Forward MP in Phuket, has issued a warning about the risk of fire during the current heatwave. Just looking at most of the hills around the island you can now see plenty of brown spots where there has been no proper rain for many months.
Temperatures on the island are forecast to reach a high of 38° Celsius from today, February 28, until Friday, March 1. Somchart has urged residents to be extra vigilant during the current extremely dry conditions.
“Because it is in the dry season, the weather is hotter than usual, from 33°-40°C. May brothers and sisters in Phuket please help to be careful and work together to prevent fires. Refrain from creating sparks in areas that risk causing a fire. Check electrical appliances in the home to prevent short circuits. Be vigilant and notice smoke and fire in the house and nearby areas.”
Somchart adds that anyone who needs to report a fire can do so by calling 076-617803-4 and choosing extension 35.
According to the Thai Meteorological Department, Phuket will see a high of 38°C today, with that high expected to continue until Friday, when it will drop slightly to 37°C, before rising again to 38°C early next week.
The South Western Meteorological Centre, located near Phuket Airport, has issued a similar forecast, adding that while there may be little wind at times, the island could see intermittent gusts of between 15 and 30 kilometres an hour.
