A tourist has been fined 1,500 baht and reported to the French Embassy and to Phuket Immigration after causing a public nuisance while riding a motorbike.

Sofiane Ouenzerfi, a 32 year old French national, also faces charges of driving without a motorbike licence, according to a Phuket Express report. The operator who rented him the bike has also been fined 1,000 baht for providing a motorbike to someone who did not have the correct licence.

It’s understood the charges are the result of a video clip going viral on social media, in which a group of foreign motorbike riders can be seen racing near Patong’s Bangla Road. In the clip, one of the riders can be seen doing wheel spins, creating a lot of smoke.

Following an investigation, Patong Police were able to identify Mr Ouenzerfi as one of the culprits. In addition to facing charges, the tourist has been reported to his embassy and to the Phuket Immigration office.
