Police in Phuket are interviewing a man from New Zealand following the death of his Thai girlfriend at the weekend. The man, named only as 40 year old “Mr Hamish”, was staying at a hotel in Patong with 33 year old “Ms Chatchaya”.
On Saturday, January 6, the couple was seen arguing near the rooftop swimming pool. Eyewitnesses then saw the New Zealander carrying the Thai woman down from the pool area, while asking hotel staff to call an ambulance.
It’s understood that Ms Chatchaya was unconscious as Mr Hamish was carrying her, although what caused this is not known. According to a Phuket Express report, hotel staff contacted the Kusoldham Foundation and Ms Chatchaya was rushed to Patong Hospital. Thirty minutes after her arrival, at around 2pm, she was pronounced dead.
Mr Hamish, meanwhile, had returned to his room to take a shower, before telling hotel workers that he planned to visit his girlfriend in hospital.
Phuket Provincial Police have now launched an investigation, with the swimming pool area and the room Mr Hamish stayed in sealed off. Officers are speaking with hotel workers as part of the investigation, as well as interviewing Mr Hamish.
At the time of writing, the NZ citizen has not been charged with any crime.
