Phuket has reported its first road traffic fatality on day 5 of the 7-day road safety campaign. The campaign runs from December 29, 2023 to January 4, 2024, the busiest time on Thailand’s roads, second only to the Songkran holiday period in April each year.

During the five-day period of December 29 to January 2, there were a total of 29 accidents reported, with 29 injuries and now, one death. The Phuket Express reports that the latest figures have been provided by the Phuket Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

Yesterday, January 2, was day 5 of the campaign and the island reported 3 road traffic accidents, with 2 people injured and 1 person killed. One accident took place in the Mueang district, with one person injured. There were also another 2 accidents in the northern Thalang district, with one person injured and one person killed.

Two of the accidents involved motorbikes and one involved a pickup truck. All 3 accidents occurred on straight roads and officials have confirmed speed was a factor in each one.
