Phuket has a new governor, Sophon Suwannarat, who, along with his wife, Ms. Busadee, arrived at Phuket International Airport as part of the (usually) bi-annual gubernatorial changeover.
They arrived at 11:40 am yesterday, October 4, to be met by the Phuket Vice Governor Amnuay Pinsuwan, local government officials and local business leaders.
Following their arrival, the couple made their way to the Phuket City Pillar Shrine and the Heroines Monument to honour Phuket’s esteemed sister-heroines Thao Thao The Kasattri and Thao Sri Soonthron. The arrival for Phuket’s new governors is a well-oiled machine and follows the same route during each new arrival.
They then visited Wat Chalong, Phuket’s largest temple, to pay their respects before chatting with the media. Eventually, Phuket’s new Governor and the First Lady arrived at their official residence in Phuket Town.

Speaking to The Phuket News, new governor Sophon told local media he had been a visitor in the past and was now looking forward to being a resident of this island.
“In the past, I used to come to Phuket for tourism and study tours, but today I come as a Phuket resident and as the Governor of Phuket.”
“Thank you to every sector today… We came here to be happy and work with all sectors to become a Phuket family in order for Phuket province to progress.”
Governor Sophon also highlighted the love and unity among the people, attributing it to Phuket’s status as a world-class tourist destination. He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in organising events in Phuket and acknowledged the Prime Minister’s interest in the province’s development.
“The Prime Minister has come to Phuket twice already. You can see that he places great importance on the development of Phuket Province. Therefore, as the Governor of Phuket Province, I will drive the work according to government policy together with all Phuket brothers and sisters.”
