On Sunday three boats full of local volunteers headed to Koh Racha Noi, south east of Phuket, to help clean up the beaches and remove tonnes of rubbish that had accumulated during the wet season monsoon. The event was organised by the team at 5 Star Marine as part of their efforts to help keep the Phang Nga Bay islands pristine for tourists to visit and enjoy.
5 Star Marine MD Shaun Stenning says it was a real community effort and the island’s beaches are now clean again.
“We had three boats full of volunteers that headed to Koh Racha Noi. They were cleaning all day until 4.30 in the afternoon. They filled an entire three-engine 5 Star Marine boat with bags of rubbish… plastic, fishing nets and general waste.”
“We’d like to thank Sunkist Yachting, Red Dorodo, Phuket Boat Lagoon, Phuket Photography Tours, the Mayor of Koh Kaew (who sent municipal trucks to move the rubbish from the boats for disposal), and especially all the volunteers who turned up to help with the massive clean-up.”
Shaun noted that projects like this allow the local community, businesses and even tourists to participate in maintaining the region’s beaches in excellent condition. More than 50 full large plastic bags were removed from the island, brimming with rubbish collected by the volunteers.
“We can’t control the weather but at least we can control our response to what the weather washes up on our beautiful beaches.”
“Thanks to everyone who turned up and the local media for their great support.”
