Runaway crane causes chaos on Patong Hill

An out-of-control crane created chaos in Patong on Saturday, December 16, after colliding with cars and motorbikes and starting a fire. The Phuket News reports that it all began when the crane failed to make it up a hill on 50 Pi Road, aka. the accident-prone Patong Hill Road.

The crane rolled backwards down the hill, crushing a number of cars, motorbikes and power poles in its downhill random carnage. Patong Police were alerted and arrived on the scene with rescue workers. They found a scene of total chaos, including a car on fire.

Eyewitness reports say the crane was unable to get up the hill and started to roll backwards, taking out everything in its path. This included three motorbikes and a number of cars.

The runaway crane also damaged 3 power poles and a car trapped under the truck caught fire. It took firefighters twenty minutes to extinguish the blaze. There are unconfirmed reports that one person was taken to Patong Hospital for treatment following the incident.

Patong Police have taken the unnamed crane driver in for questioning. Officers have not provided the name of the crane company either, although the Phuket News notes the vehicle bore stickers with the words “Phuket Crane Company”.
