Passengers on a recent AirAsia flight from Bangkok to Phuket got more than they bargained for when a snake appeared near a section of the overhead bins. The incident was captured by TikTok user @wannabnailssalon, going viral not just in Thailand but internationally.
The Phuket News reports that the incident happened on Saturday, January 13, with the snake making its appearance as the flight was on its descent into Phuket. It’s understood the TikTok user who recorded the footage was returning to the island from studying in Bangkok.
She says the snake appeared just after the captain had announced the descent of the aircraft and asked everyone to remain seated. The student says she was asleep at the time but the disturbance among her fellow passengers woke her up.
In the footage, a flight attendant can be seen trying and failing to persuade the snake into a bottle. In the end, he used the bottle to get the snake into a plastic bag and removed it from the area.
Both the crew and passengers have been praised on social media for remaining calm throughout the incident. Questions are being asked however, about how the snake got there in the first place. It’s understood none of the passengers have admitted to bringing the creature on board, leading people to speculate that it simply slipped onto the plane by itself.
According to the Facebook group, Snakes of Phuket, the snake has been identified as a harmless Lycodon davisoni or common bridle snake.
The snake’s fate is not known.
