A 35 year old Tunisian man, involved in a tragic incident with a Chinese woman on Friday, October 6 at a local hotel in Karon, has been cooperating with police during the investigation. The identity of the Tunisian man has not been disclosed at this stage.
A Chinese woman, the man’s ‘ex girlfriend’ fell, or jumped, from the 10th floor of the upscale hotel. She had visited Phuket 18 times before.
Hotel staff reported that they heard commotion and witnessed the foreign man “holding the Chinese woman by her leg” on the 10th floor balcony before she fell to her death. The precise details of their relationship remain unclear.
The Tunisian man had legally entered Thailand with a work permit and claimed to be the Chinese woman’s ex boyfriend. They had dinner together at the hotel and consumed alcohol during the evening leading up to the incident. Reportedly, the Chinese woman expressed a desire to end her life during their time together.
Inside the hotel room, the Tunisian man told police that he briefly left alone as he went into the bathroom. When he returned he found the Chinese woman on the balcony, seemingly on the brink of jumping. He told police he intervened, bringing her back into the room to talk and calm her down.
But about an hour later, the Tunisian man informed the police that the Chinese woman again made a dash for the balcony. He hurriedly followed her, managing to grasp her leg as she hung from the edge. Regrettably, he was unable to pull her back to safety, and she fell to the ground before he could summon assistance.
Karon police say the Tunisian man has been cooperative during the investigation, and they are currently scrutinising CCTV footage to verify the events he described.
