Two foreign nationals have died in Phuket after the motorbike they were riding was struck by a car being driven by a Russian woman. The victims have been named as 21 year old Nickolas Joseph Ayoub, a US national, and his female passenger, 19 year old Schintgen Cey-lan, from Luxembourg.
The driver of the car involved in the collision has been named only as 41-year-old Russian national, “Irina”, who is understood to be receiving hospital treatment for her injuries.
The collision happened in the early hours of yesterday, November 5, on Wiset Road in Rawai, near the entrance to the Friendship Beach Resort, according to a report from Khaosod English. Officers from Chalong Police were notified at around 1am, arriving on the scene with medical staff from Vachira Phuket Hospital, the Rawai Municipal Rescue Unit, and the Phuket Foundation.
They found a Phuket-registered grey car, which had collided with a Honda Click motorbike bearing a red Phuket licence plate. Nearby were the bodies of Mr Ayoub and Ms Cey-lan, who were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Khaosod English report, their bodies were transported to Vachira Phuket Hospital and both their embassies have been informed. The Russian car driver was taken to hospital for treatment of her injuries, while officers noted damage to an electric pole, traffic signal poles, and electrical wires at the scene.
According to other media reports, the car driver underwent blood alcohol testing although the result has not been confirmed. The police plan to interview the Russian woman once her treatment is complete, with a view to pressing charges of reckless driving causing the death of others.
