Thailand number 17 in list of “100 best cuisines in the world”

Kidney disease and Thai food

Thai cuisine has taken 17th place in a Taste Atlas list of the 100 Best Cuisines in the World, according to a Nation Thailand report.

Taste Atlas is a culinary website that collates recipes and reviews from food critics around the world. It released its latest list of the world’s best cuisines on Tuesday.

That Thailand is beaten one place by US ‘cuisine’ in this survey is a surprise.

Italy took the top spot, with a score of 4.65 from Taste Atlas, followed by Japan, also on 4.65, and Greece, with 4.64. Thai cuisine performed well, with a score of 4.48. Taste Atlas say in total, it rated 395,205 dishes and 115,660 food products from around the world.

“Based on these ratings, the top 50 food items for each cuisine were extracted, and the best-rated cuisines in the world were ranked according to the average ratings of the best-rated dishes and food products of each country.”

On the same day, the website also published its list of the top 100 dishes in the world, based on ratings accumulated in the last year. In at no. 1 is Brazil’s Picanha cut of beef, followed by Roti Canai from Malaysia in second place, and Thailand’s own Pad Krapao taking the third spot.

Pad Krapao (or Grapao) is a hugely popular dish made from meat stir-fried with chilli and basil leaves (the krapao part). In September, the dish won the Taste Atlas accolade of “Best Stir-Fry in the World 2023.” Earlier this year, Taste Atlas named Thailand’s penang curry the “Best Curry in the World“.

Nation Thailand reports that the Taste Atlas website also singles out a number of Thai restaurants it recommends to visitors and Thai food lovers. These include Por Pochaya in Phra Nakhon, in Bangkok; Plu in Sathon, Bangkok; Mae Pom Roti in Ayutthaya, and Dan Chicken & Rice in Chiang Mai.

Not every Thai dish has fared so well on the site, however. In February, Taste Atlas placed Kaeng Som (Spicy-Sour Fish Curry) at number 12 in its list of “worst dishes in the world”.
