Six people have been injured after a Phuket minibus crashed after the driver took his eyes off the road to check a GPS app on his phone. The accident occurred on the Mueang Chao Fa Road in Wichit, in the Mueang district, yesterday morning, April 24.
Police and emergency workers arrived on the scene, where a damaged minibus was parked at the side of the road. Six people, some of them foreign tourists, had sustained minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
According to a Phuket Express report, the bus driver, 30 year old Arnon Channarong, gave a statement to say he’d been taking his passengers from Patong to Rassada pier.
He says as he wasn’t sure of the way, he was using a GPS app on his phone. After looking down at the phone to check the route, he then lost control of his vehicle while navigating a curve in the road. Sound familiar?
The driver has been tested for alcohol consumption and Wichit Police say no trace of alcohol was found in his system. Officers say they believe the accident was the result of Arnon being distracted by his navigation app. The Phuket Express reports that no charges have been filed at the time of writing, but could still be forthcoming.
